What is Podcasting?
Podcasting is a popular method for people to start their own internet radio shows for a particular topic that interests them. Anyone can start a podcast and it doesn't take much equipment. Typically all that is required is your computer, recording software, microphone, and possibly headphones. However, if you want to have decent sound quality, a good microphone can make the difference.
My Current Microphone
As of now I use a fairly inexpensive Logitech usb microphone. I have been using it to make videos which I upload to YouTube. The sound quality is fine, however, I eventually want to upgrade to a much better mic. I have my eye on the RODE Podcaster. The price difference is huge and so is the quality. I paid no more than $20 for my current mic while the RODE Podcaster costs about $230. I have heard the sound quality and it is a significant improvement.
Omnidirectional VS Directional
Before looking at brands and models, it's a good idea to learn about the basics of the two types of microphones available. Omnidirectional microphones pick up sound from all directions. They are great mics for recording interviews because unlike directional microphones, you won't need to separate mics for each person. However, the omnidirectional mics will record ambient noises like background noise, wind, etc.
Directional microphones are the opposite of omnidirectional mics. They are great for single person use such as someone recording from their computer at their desk. They won't pick up as much background noise as an omnidirectional microphone but don't work as well for conducting an interview. These microphones are also referred to as unidirectional.
Price Ranges
Prices range from the ultra cheap (about $12) to the very expensive (several hundred dollars.) Keep in mind the price does determine the sound quality. You can spend about $15 for a mic and be happy with the sound of your podcast. The more expensive mics will make your voice a lot clearer and richer sounding as well as minimizing the background noise.
