How to Start Running for Beginners

Walk Don't Run

Most beginners will take off running right away and they don't make it very far. This is especially true if you are already out of shape. The first thing you should do if you haven't exercised in a long time is get a physical from your doctor. Your doctor can help determine if you are physically able to handle a new exercise routine. Once you have the go ahead from your doctor, you are ready to begin.

It is wise to start off slow by going for brisk walks first, building up to a light jog, and then a run. Try a littler harder each day by walking for longer periods each time and picking up the pace. Eventually, you will become comfortable enough to run and then you can build upon your progress there as well. Once you begin running on a regular basis, you will be amazed by much progress you will make. However, if you slack off, it will take longer to get to where you want to be and each time you start up again, it will basically feel like you are starting from scratch.

You can begin on a treadmill or outdoors, whichever you feel comfortable or whatever is more convenient.

Get to a Running Shoe Store

While it is true that you can run in just about any running shoe, if you can afford to, it would help your feet and running form to purchase a decent pair of running shoes. I have run in crappy running shoes before and when I finally received a pair of well made running shoes, I could immedieately tell the difference.

The big benefit about a running shoe store is that they can advise you on what will work for your style of running. They can find the right shoes for your feet and you can ask questions. If you prefer to shoe shop on your own, there are several top brands that you could start with. My favorite brands include:

  • Asics
  • Nike Shox
  • Pearl Izumi

Running magazines like "Runner's World" often have running shoe reviews that go into detail about the pros and cons of each shoe as well as the prices. Once you have your shoes, learn how to lace them up properly. You can custom tie your running shoes:

Staying Motivated

Running can be tough and it will wear on you mentally as well as physically, however, it is one of the most rewarding sports there is. Experiencing the "runner's high" will help to keep you running on a regular basis but there will be days where you will not feel like putting on your running shoes and heading out the door.

You can keep motivated by immersing yourself in your new found activity. I found several ways to stay motivated and keep running a priority in my life.

Subscribe to Running Magazines

There are good running magazines on the market and I recommend subscribing to at least one of them. My favorite is Runner's World because it is packed with really good information from running shoe reviews to recipes. Reading them motivates me to keep running even when I don't always feel like it. They have inspiring stories of people who have overcame difficulties by using running to get through them.

Join a Running Forum

You can find running forums all over the internet. The great thing about these forums is that it brings together like-minded individuals who all enjoy running. You will find all levels of runners in forums from beginners to experts. If you are looking for tips or recommendations on running gear, forums are a great place to find out.

Keep a Running Log

A running log can be kept in a simple journal or by using many of the various web based running logs. I use a simple web based version located at www.running-log.com but you can find numerous ones and try them out. Keeping a log will help you to keep track of your progress and you will become motivated when you see your mileage adding up each week.

Run with a Group

Find out about running groups in your area. It can be fun to run with other people and your motivation level will be high because everyone can push each other. If you don't like groups you can always find a running partner. Running with someone else will also help the time go by faster.

Train for a Marathon

Training for a marathon is a great way to get into running. Even as a beginner, you can train for a marathon. There are many marathons that are held throughout the year including half-marathons and full-marathons. If either of those don't interest you, you can even try smaller ones like a 5K or 10K. Many beginners can easily work their way up to a 5K and completing one will make you feel incredible.
