Change Your Mindset

I am not athletic and exercise wasn't a part of my life growing up. I never even viewed exercise as fun which is why it took so long for me to make it a part of my lifestyle. I put on weight and my mom (who exercises regularly) would nag me to join a gym and get off of the couch. I had no motivation to exercise, especially after a long 8+ hour day of working behind a computer.

What Finally Got Me Off the Couch

I was sick of how I felt and the way I looked. I had no energy. I'd get up for work dragging to the shower, skip breakfast most days, eat an unhealthy large lunch, then get home to sit on the couch and do it all over again the next day. Talk about depressing! I wanted to feel better, fit my clothes better, and just get healthy. I guess you could say, I was fed up and that is what most people may have to feel in order to make a change.

Once I got my mindset right, I signed up to my local gym. Joining a gym is by no means necessary but it can definitely help in terms of motivation.

Use Your Gym to the Fullest

Joining a gym holds many benefits but unfortunately, a lot of people who join a gym with good intentions end up wasting their membership because they stop going after several months or sooner. Here are some tips to help you stick with it and not burn yourself out.

Learn About Your Gym Inside and Out

There is a such thing as being intimidated by the gym. It sounds silly but it happens to many new gym members. Some people join their gym and never familiarize themselves with any of the features, equipment, or amenties. They become stuck using the same piece of equipment day after day because they are intimidated by other members who know their way around, or they feel self-conscious thinking that people will be watching their every move.

The best way to avoid this feeling is to get to know everything about your gym. You are a paying member so if you want a personal trainer to show you how to use every piece of equipment, you have every right to ask. Some gyms have certain amenities like basketball courts, swimming pools, raquetball courts, saunas, and so on. Take advantage of these amentieis by trying them all out at least once. This gives you the opportunity to become comfortable with your gym as well as learning what amenities you would enjoy using on a regular basis.

Try Every Piece of Gym Equipment

Like I mentioned earlier, some people get stuck on one piece of gym equipment and never stray. This could be a treadmill, stairstepper, or a couple of weight machines. You are paying to use every single piece of equipment in your gym, therefore, it is up to you to try everything at least once. If you are uncertain how a machine works, ask a personal trainer to show you how it works. You will have fun trying them all out and you will learn what you like to use and what you would rather avoid.

Try Every Class at Least Once

If your gym offers various types of classes, sign up to try them at least once. The benefits in this are you will add variety to your workouts, you will meet other cool people who take the same classes, and you may discover more things you like. Do you ever wonder why so many people love spin classes or yoga? They all had to try it at one time and ended up loving it. You could be missing out if you don't give them a shot.

Hire a Personal Trainer

If your budget allows, take advantage of hiring a personal trainer. A lot of people get burned out at the gym or become frustrated because they lack motivation. Not only that, but many people do not know how to start exercising. It's easy to jump on a cardio machine for an hour but do you have a goal? Do you understand how your diet must change in order to lose weight?

A personal trainer can teach you the fundamentals and then you are set to continue on your own. There is nothing wrong with learning about fitness from a professional. A good trainer will ask you about your goals, set up a plan designed specifically for you, track your progress, and teach you everything you need to know to maintain after your sessions are done.

Have Fun and Remember to Take Breaks

Finally, you can make the most of your gym membership by having fun and taking needed breaks. Once you have learned about your gym inside and out, begin adding variety so that every day is different (if that is what you like) or every week. It is also important to take breaks when you need them. You want the gym to be something that you look forward to, not just another appointment you have to keep.

Make your gym time your "me time." Use it to relieve stress and as your time to get away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life. The gym makes a great retreat from the daily grind we deal with.

These are great suggestions. So few people really get the most out of their gym memberships, and even trying a few of the things you've listed here could help them do so. Having a personal trainer is also an excellent decision, as we all know our capacities somehow go beyond what we thought we could do when we have someone to guide and motivate us.
